Message from the Chair
Baystate Health's Department of Pathology, which includes Baystate Reference Laboratory (BRL) is one of the largest laboratory medicine practices in New England.
The enthusiasm emanating from the world of health care research has become more tangible in recent years as applications make the transition from potential to reality. We are no longer surprised to hear terms like "genome" or "proteomics" or digital and telepathology or laboratory automation. These technological advances allow for a broader toolbox for the fields of diagnostic medicine. This is where the future of pathology is trending, towards using all available technologies to deliver the correct diagnosis to patients and caregivers in a timely and efficient manner amid staffing challenges in the post Covid-19 pandemic era.
Baystate Health is served by one Department of Pathology across all four BH hospitals—Baystate Medical Center, Baystate Franklin Medical Center, Baystate Noble Hospital and Baystate Wing Hospital. Baystate Health Pathology is under one leadership for all the fields of pathology, including anatomic, clinical, genetics, & molecular pathology, all with a subspecialty focus.
Baystate Medical Center is not just a cancer or referral hospital, not just a pediatric or women's hospital, not just a research or community facility, and not just a Level I trauma facility. Instead, the full gamut of diseases is represented, including normal healthy tissue, malignancies, metabolic abnormalities, infections, and so on. Together with the clinical data and trained subspecialty pathologists, this constitutes a unique resource of tremendous value to an enthusiastic and motivated resident or fellow.
We provide exceptional behind-the-scenes patient care with concurrent interdisciplinary professional consultation. The strong interaction of technical and client service personnel delivers optimal patient care and client service. Nearly 70% of the clinical workload comes from the outpatient setting, as the department provide services to ~1,400 clients throughout western Massachusetts, northern Connecticut, and southern Vermont.

Research
Baystate Medical Center Pathology academic per capita productivity outpaces many better-known departments. Baystate Pathology is all-inclusive with both anatomic and clinical pathology, to include molecular pathology, cytogenetics, electron microscopy, and immunohistochemistry. All of our board certified pathologists continue their diagnostic skills, enhanced by their diverse subspecialty qualifications, with state-of-the-art technologies deliver the highest quality diagnostic services available. Our faculty's average age is 10 years younger than the average US pathologist, and they take pride in being aggressive and entrepreneurial. They have trained at world-class institutions, such as Harvard, Yale, Johns Hopkins, Mayo Clinic, Duke, Stanford, and the University of Pennsylvania, and share a commitment to our academic mission, while applying cutting-edge diagnostic technology and clinical care for the benefit of both the patients and physicians of Western Massachusetts.
