Quality Management and Patient Safety Elective

Goals

This elective is designed to explore the fundamental issues in defining, measuring, and improving healthcare quality and safety.  The student will gain an appreciation for how healthcare quality is defined and of the practical application of evidence-based medicine.

Objectives

The student will:

  1. Recognize the challenges in measuring patient safety and strategies employed to
    measure patient safety
  2. Understand Quality measurement and reporting, including the practical use of "pay for
    performance"
  3. Define the structure/process/outcome triad for measuring healthcare quality
  4. Analyze a quality problem by identifying the quality gap and designing potential
    improvement strategies
  5. Develop an Aim statement, a measurement strategy for a QI project and a PDSA cycle
  6. Understand the use of organizational change in healthcare, including employing
    concepts of "teamwork" and thinking of "safety as a system property"
  7. Understand the process redesign of our delivery system and how "reliable systems" can
    be applied to healthcare

The elective will allow the student to:

  • Participate in a research or practical project pertaining to either quality improvement or patient safety
  • See QI principles in action and participate in error analyses, peer review teams, and improvement projects
