PE-411 Pediatric Infectious Diseases Elective

Goals
This elective provides an opportunity to be involved in the care of children with infectious disease problems admitted to a 50-bed pediatric inpatient, a 10-bed PICU, or a 55-bed NICU. The student will participate in an outpatient experience in pediatric infectious diseases including HIV care and TB clinics.
Objectives
The student will...
- develop history and physical examination skills relevant to pediatric infectious diseases.
- present a review of an infectious disease topic at the end of the rotation.
- obtain basic knowledge of the mechanisms of action, indications, and adverse reactions for commonly used antimicrobial agents.
- understand the presentation, epidemiology, and pathogenesis of a wide variety of infectious diseases.
- develop diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for the care of children with infectious disease problems.
- understand the work-up of babies born to mothers with HIV and the follow-up can care of children with HIV infection.
- develop critical reasoning skills in evaluating infectious disease problems.
