Goals
The goals of this elective in Gynecologic Oncology are:
- To broaden the student's clinical experience in gynecologic oncology, including exposure to both inpatient and ambulatory care of women with gynecologic malignancies
- To include the student as an integral member in the patient-care team, including active participation in gynecologic oncology surgical procedures
- To improve the student's patient care skills, including the ability to perform and present histories and physical exams, formulate differential diagnoses, make clinical decisions, and manage postoperative patients
- To improve the student's surgical skills
Objectives
After completion of the elective in Gynecologic Oncology, the student will be able to:
- Obtain a complete history with emphasis on pertinent cancer risk factors and family history, and perform a complete physical exam, including breast and pelvic exams
- Develop differential diagnoses, pursue appropriate plan to refine the diagnosis, and develop an evidence-based treatment plan
- Understand the evaluation and management of common problems presenting to a gynecologic oncologist, including pelvic masses, post-menopausal bleeding, and preinvasive diseases and invasive malignancies of the uterus, cervix, ovaries, fallopian tubes, peritoneum, vulva, and vagina
- Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing
- Have an appreciation of the treatments for gynecologic malignancies including the surgical management, radiation and chemotherapy treatments
