Goals
This elective provides a broad exposure to adult cardiology by way of direct involvement with the cardiology fellow and attending on the Cardiology Consult Service. The Cardiology Consult Service provides cardiac evaluations to help with the management of patients admitted to the hospital by internal medicine physicians or hospitalists, provides preoperative evaluations for non-cardiac surgery, and evaluation of emergency room patients with cardiac issues. The student will improve/perfect history taking, physical examination, and patient management skills.
Objectives
The student will...
- attend cardiology lectures and be given selected articles on major topics and clinical guidelines for cardiology.
- participate in reading sessions in the electrocardiogram, echocardiography and nuclear cardiology laboratories.
- observe cardiac catheterization and electrophysiology procedures.
- explore the integration of the history, physical examination, non-invasive, and invasive diagnostic procedures.
- become familiar with appropriateness criteria regarding diagnostic procedures and therapeutic options using evidence-based medicine, when pertinent.
- depending on schedule, student may be asked to participate in one Journal Club presentation by reviewing a specific article, discussing it with a cardiology attending and fellow, and then present to a conference for open discussion.
