Drew -- Fitness Instructor from Shelburne Falls
Before I began the Adult Weight Management Program at Baystate, I suffered from severe sleep apnea and had elevated blood sugar and cholesterol. Now, a year after gastric bypass surgery, I teach fitness classes at the local YMCA and am working toward becoming a personal trainer. The care I've received has given me my life back!
Amy -- Payroll/Benefits Coordinator from Agawam
I began the program in May, 2012, and since my surgery in January, 2013, I have met my goal of losing 100 pounds and have currently lost 108! Having my surgery has given my life an overhaul - I have implemented healthy habits, such as eating a high protein low sugar diet, exercising at the gym at least 3 to 4 times per week – In fact, in November 2013, I was named member of the month at my gym and I have earned a certification to be a Health and Wellness Program Coordinator for small businesses. I'm enjoying life, enjoying shopping and being girly for the first time, and enjoying having a ton of energy so that I can keep up with my busy life, which includes my full time job, my part time music career, my husband, son, two stepdaughters, a dog and two cats.
Michelle -- Customer Service Representative from Hampden
In 2011 my diabetes was out of control, I was on meds for depression, thyroid and cholesterol and my liver was beginning to fail. I had the bypass in August and after only 5 days was off all meds including my insulin shots! It’s been 2 years now and my diabetes is under control, my liver function is back to normal and I have a BMI of under 25 and I am a runner for the first time in my life. I've run numerous races including 5k's, 10k's, 10 milers and half marathons! I am the happiest and healthiest I have ever been and truly believe this surgery and Dr. Kuhn saved my life.
Pearl -- Administrative Assistant from Indian Orchard
I began my journey in December of 2006 and had my surgery in February 2008. This has got to be the best decision that I have ever made and it has been a great journey so far. Prior to my surgery I was being treated for high blood pressure and during the evaluation and pre-operative testing was discovered to have a fairly severe case of sleep apnea for which I started treatment. After my surgery, I was off all blood pressure medications and within a year and a half I no longer had the sleep apnea. I have been able to do so many activities after the surgery that I haven’t been able to do for too many years. I have hiked two rainforests, hiked to the top of a couple of mountains and this is just to name a couple.
Joe --Custodian from Springfield
Joe Wynn began his journey in 2003 and had his surgery in December, 2005. After the surgery, he lost over 240 lbs and in 2010 he weighed 216 pounds, has a 32-inch waist and plays in a touch football league. He continues to attend support group meetings, and believes, now more than every, that these meetings are the key to his success. "The surgery fixes your stomach, not your head," he tells others when he participates in support group sessions. "This is not the easy way out, no matter what anyone tells you." For Joe, success is measured not simply in the number of pounds lost, but in the determination he's found to live a healthy, active life.
Jenn -- Accountant from Chicopee
In October 2012, I was at my highest weight and my doctor had just told me I was pre-diabetic. That was my wake up call. Since starting the non-surgical weight loss program in December 2012, I have lost over 70lbs. Working regularly with Kim Estremera and attending the support and exercise meetings was just what I needed to lose the weight. With all the support and guidance from everyone at Adult Weight Management, I know I am on my way to a healthy future.
