Pediatric Sedation Service
Who We Are:
With more and more diagnostic and therapeutic tests like CAT scans and MRIs available to very young patients, Baystate Children's Hospital developed a pediatric sedation service to ensure state-of-the-art, safe and successful outcomes.
Many of these procedures require patients to remain relatively motionless during the test, and since this may be difficult for many children, moderate to deep sedation is often required to ensure the best test result. Baystate Children's Hospital provides pediatric sedation services in a child- and family-friendly environment to decrease anxiety for patients and their families.
The sedation services are provided by pediatric intensivists, specially trained pediatricians who specialize in caring for critically ill children with many years of experience with sedation medications. The use of intravenous sedation medications instead of general anesthesia dramatically reduces the risks of the procedures and decreases the length of time the patient is medicated.
