Pediatric Sedation Service

Children undergoing diagnostic or therapeutic procedures such as CT or MRI scans, EEGs, echocardiograms, spinal taps, PICC line placements or other procedures may require sedation to relieve anxiety and to block pain to allow these procedures to be successfully completed. Many of these procedures require patients to remain relatively motionless during the test. Since this may be difficult for many children, moderate to deep sedation is often required to ensure the best result. Baystate Children's Hospital provides pediatric sedation services in a child and family friendly environment to decrease anxiety for patients and their families.

Our pediatric critical care physicians are skilled at providing sedation for such procedures in a controlled, monitored setting for both pediatric inpatients and pediatric outpatients. The use of intravenous sedation medications instead of general anesthesia dramatically reduces the risks of the procedure and decreases the length of time the patient is medicated.

Parents should talk to their pediatrician if they feel their child would benefit from sedation for a planned procedure. Physician’s offices can discuss sedation options for their patients by calling the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) sedation physician on call. Sedated procedures can be scheduled through Access services at 413-794-2222.
