At Baystate Health, our skilled staff is equipped to manage both routine labor and delivery and high risk and preterm births.

Newborn medicine specialists, called neonatologists, are board-certified pediatric specialists who receive additional training in newborn intensive care. They are experts in caring for premature babies, high-risk babies, and babies born with medical problems.

Our newborn medicine specialists care for babies in the Davis Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) – the only level III NICU in western Massachusetts. They coordinate all of your baby’s care with the extensive resources of Baystate Children’s Hospital (BCH) behind them.

Our Infant Care Services

At BCH, our specialists:

  • Provide care to newborns at the time of birth – including in cases of emergency cesarean sections when vaginal delivery is not possible
  • Diagnose and treat newborns who have serious or life-threatening medical and surgical problems
  • Coordinate the care of newborns born prematurely, critically ill, or in need of surgery
  • Provide regular follow-up care for infants discharged from the NICU
