Taking exceptional care of our patients, our program, and each other

"It’s not only a great facility, there’s also a big welcoming family in Internal Medicine."—Ghassan Alzayer MD, IM resident
Here's what residents are saying about our program!

Educational Innovation Sets us Above

Meet Our New Interns!

Collection of headshots of the 2023 MATCH Internal Medicine Residents

Patient care and education are inextricably linked. Our internal medicine residency programs maximize the quality of both.

Our Learner-Manager-Teacher model balances supervision and autonomy at every stage of learning. As you gain competence, you progress through the roles of Learner, Manager and Teacher, gaining more independence at each stage.

A month-long orientation lays foundational skills you need to be successful. You’ll spend 2 weeks fully immersed in patient care on the wards, followed by experiences in the clinic and the critical care units. Our boot camp teaches you how to care for acutely ill patients using simulation scenarios.

In late June our “Fly Up” block gets you ready to take on the responsibilities of your new role as Manager or Teacher before the new interns arrive.

Our Culture Sets Us Apart

We take exceptional care of our patients, our program, and each other.

It's an honor and privilege to care for our patients. Likewise, we consider it a privilege to train our residents.

We continuously evaluate our program for educational and clinical value. Our residents and faculty share this responsibility.

We embrace team-based care and value the strengths born of diversity.

We Offer Two Training Programs

Categorical Program: 3-years of training in general internal medicine, offering a broad exposure to inpatient and outpatient care.

Primary Care Program: 3-year program emphasizing ambulatory, outpatient and community medicine.

The Internal Medicine Residency at UMass Chan Medical School-Baystate is ACGME-accredited.
