Scholarly Activity

As an ASHP accredited residency, Baystate Medical Center Residents are required to conduct a practice related project.  Our residents are encouraged to engage in a project that has a research component.  Learning the required processes and approvals provides a valuable experience for our residents.  Project examples include:

  • Incidence of development of in-hospital venous thromboembolism in pediatric patients at Baystate Medical Center.
  • Pill Burden and medication adherence in ambulatory care patients with Type 2 Diabetes
  • Evaluation of the treatment of uncomplicated cellulitis in hospitalized adult patients
  • Evaluation of diabetic ketoacidosis management and associated medication errors
  • Impact of pharmacy student and resident led discharge counseling on heart failure readmissions
  • Comparison of per-protocol vs. non-protocol fluid management in the treatment of acute respiratory distress syndrome in the intensive care unit
  • Implementation of a standardization protocol for the documentation of pharmacy interventions
  • Efficacy of high-dose daptomycin in the treatment of Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia

Graduates of the BMC PGY-1 residency program will complete a teaching certificate program. As an academic teaching center, BMC Pharmacy Department serves as an experiential education site for more than 100 students per academic year.  PGY-1 residents will serve as preceptors and have the ability to teach sixth-year Doctor of Pharmacy Candidates.
