What Kind of Care Do You Need?
When You Need Routine Care or a Screening Visit
Visiting your primary care provider (PCP) is the best way to prevent illness. Your PCP should be your first choice for routine medical care and for non-life-threatening urgent illnesses or injuries.
Call your primary care practice if you have:
- Cough, cold, flu
- Ear infections or sore throat
- Skin problems
- Urinary tract infections or pain or burning when urinating
- Chronic conditions like allergies and asthma
- Issues with control of chronic conditions (for example: arthritis, COPD, heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity)
Current Baystate Health patients can schedule in-person and virtual appointments with their primary care providers through the MyBaystate Patient Portal. You can also schedule an appointment online.
If your situation requires immediate medical treatment, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room. For immediate help with a mental health crisis, call 988.
When You Need Immediate Medical Treatment
Hospital emergency rooms (ER) provide medical care 24/7. Their specially trained staff has the tools to handle complex, urgent medical needs.
Go to the ER for:
- Severe bleeding
- Chest pains
- Inability to breathe
- Severe eye injuries
- Head, spinal cord or back injuries
- Broken bones
- Severe stomach pain
- Sudden change in mental state, sudden severe headache, and other signs of stroke symptoms
Many ERs, including the five Baystate Health ERs, are often seeing large numbers of people with the flu and COVID-19. If you have symptoms from either that require emergency care, call your primary care provider before heading to the ER.
When You Need to be Seen Quickly but It’s Not an Emergency
Convenient care (or urgent care) centers are same-day clinics that can handle a range of non-emergency medical issues.
They see people who need to be seen quickly but their conditions aren’t considered emergencies. Convenient care centers are also good options when your primary care provider isn't available.
You can visit a convenient care clinic for help with:
- Colds, coughs, flu, fever, sore throat
- Asthma and upper respiratory problems
- Severe cuts that require stiches
- Rash, skin and eye infections
- Urinary tract infections/ pain or burning when urinating
- Earaches
- Migraine headaches
- Strains and sprains
- Stomach pain, nausea, diarrhea, vomiting
